A MESSAGE FROM NORTHUMBRIA POLICE

Northumbria Police are aware of a planned demonstration due to take place on Saturday 15 September 2018, starting at Mowbray Park in Sunderland city centre.

They are also aware of a counter-demonstration to be held in Keel Square on the same day.

Northumbria Police have a duty to police protests and respect the right of people to hold such events - ensuring the safety of the public is also of utmost priority.

The Force has extensive experience of policing such events and have been working closely with the organisers to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.

Extra officers will be out on patrol to offer reassurance to members of the public and local businesses.

The right to protest is a democratic right and demonstrations can only be banned under the strictest of conditions. The police do not have the power to ban protests.
